Phoenix burgers
The best burger restaurants in Phoenix
Best burger in Phoenix: Harvey's Wineburger. Pickr rates Harvey's Wineburger 9.4 out of 10, ahead of the 8 others we ranked.

Almost every "best burgers in Phoenix" list has the same problem: nobody checked whether the restaurants are still trading. We started by confirming that each one is open today, which immediately removed several places that still appear on popular lists — including one that closed in 2020. What is left is nine independent burger restaurants, every figure read off a page we opened ourselves, and not a single national chain among them.
How we built this list
We began from current local coverage rather than from memory or from older listicles, with Phoenix New Times' November 2025 burger roundup as the spine, and then verified every restaurant independently.
The first filter was simply: is it open? This matters more than it should. Delux Burger appears on a great many "best burger in Phoenix" lists and has been closed since 2020 — its domain now redirects to a coffee company. Monti's La Casa Vieja closed in 2014, The Grind in 2016, and Rehab Burger Therapy's Tempe location in 2019, though the Scottsdale flagship is still trading. Any list naming those as current is a list nobody checked.
The second filter was whether the restaurant is actually a burger restaurant. Several names that come up constantly are something else entirely: Chino Bandido is Chinese-Mexican and serves no burger at all, Little Miss BBQ and Bobby-Q are barbecue, Monroe's is Nashville hot chicken, Original ChopShop is health-focused fast casual, and Cornish Pasty's "Royale with Cheese" is a pasty filling rather than a burger. We left all of them out.
The third filter was independence. Every restaurant below is independently owned. That was not a rule we imposed at the start — it is simply what survived, because no national chain appears in current local burger coverage. Zinburger and Culinary Dropout are Fox Restaurant Concepts, Cold Beers & Cheeseburgers is an 18-location group, and Smashburger, Shake Shack and Hopdoddy are national. None of them earned a place here on merit.
What we scored, and the one number we could not get
Quality of the work carries 30 points — the burger itself, and particularly whether there is an actual method behind it: house-grinding, mesquite charcoal, a specific cut. Reliability is 25, meaning consistency and whether the place is dependably open and dependably itself. Value is 15, which is the burger against its price, not the lowest price: a $7.99 burger that is very good scores higher here than a $16.50 burger that is slightly better. What other customers say is 20. Credentials are 10, and in this category that means a real award from a real awarding body — which almost nobody has.
One honest limitation, stated up front. Every rating in this article is from Google and read on 2 October 2026. Yelp blocked automated access on every single attempt, so we have no Yelp figures at all, and we would rather tell you that than quote a number from a search result we could not open. Where a restaurant does not publish a price or a patty weight, the table says "not published" instead of guessing.
We also threw out two award claims. One restaurant's "Phoenix Magazine 2025 Best of the Valley" is contradicted by Phoenix Magazine's own index, which has no Best Burger category that year and does not mention them. Another describes itself as the best in Arizona with no body, year or source attached. Neither counted. The full standard is here.
Two awards that get conflated, and one that should not be
Phoenix New Times gives two separate burger awards each year and they are routinely reported as though they were one. In 2025 the editors' Best Hamburgers award went to Harvey's Wineburger; the Readers' Choice Best Burger went to Aftermath Kitchen & Bar. They are different awards decided by different people, and a restaurant holding one does not hold the other.
We also want to be precise about a James Beard mention attached to Main Burger. Its ownership team are 2026 Best Chef: Southwest semifinalists — not winners — and the nomination is for their restaurants Espiritu and Tacos Chiwas, not for Main Burger. It is a real signal about the cooking and we have counted it as a small one. It is not a James Beard award for a burger, and anyone telling you it is has not read the citation.

Harvey's Wineburger
16th Street, Phoenix
Our pick, and the one place on this list with an editorial award behind it rather than a popularity poll. Harvey's won Best of Phoenix 2025 "Best Hamburgers" — the editors' award, chosen by writers who eat for a living, which is a different and harder thing than winning a readers' vote. The burger itself is built on an actual technique rather than a topping gimmick: Angus beef cooked with a splash of wine, which is the kind of specific, repeatable method that produces the same burger on a Tuesday in February as it does on a Saturday night. At $10.75 it is priced like a neighbourhood burger rather than a destination one, it holds 4.5 stars across 2,207 Google reviews, and the kitchen runs until 2am — which, for a city where almost everything closes at nine, is a service in itself.

What we could not verify
- Google is the only aggregate rating here. Yelp served a bot wall to every attempt, so we have no Yelp figure for any restaurant on this list and did not want to take one from a search snippet.
- Patty weight is not published.
The Chuckbox
Tempe
The heaviest weight of public evidence on this list by a wide margin: 4.7 stars across 5,898 Google reviews, which is roughly double the next-highest count. A number that large, sustained at that average, is close to impossible to manufacture — it is accumulated one char-grilled burger at a time over decades next to a university campus, and it is the single most convincing customer signal we found in Phoenix. The Tijuana Torpedo — a patty stuffed with jalapeño jack — is the order. It would rank first on evidence alone; it sits second only because it publishes no prices anywhere, which in 2026 is a genuine mark against a restaurant.

What we could not verify
- 🔴 No prices are published anywhere we could find. The menu on the restaurant's own site is an image and the /menu path returns a 404, so we cannot tell you what anything costs. Aggregator prices for this restaurant are unsourced and we are not repeating them.
- Patty weight is not published.
Original Hamburger Works
15th Avenue, Phoenix
The best value on this list and the most specific cooking claim on it. The burgers are flame-grilled over real mesquite charcoal — and the restaurant quantifies it, burning around 120 pounds of mesquite a day, which is the sort of checkable operational detail that separates a method from a marketing line. The Big One is a third of a pound at $8.99, there is a self-serve condiment bar, and it has been running at the same 15th Avenue address since 1977. The current owners have held it since 1994. Nearly half a century in one location with 4.6 stars across 3,877 reviews is its own argument.

What we could not verify

Paradise Valley Burger Co.
Scottsdale
The most ambitious cooking on the list and the one that most clearly justifies a higher price. The Brûlée — burnt sugar, egg, bacon and havarti — is a genuinely composed burger rather than a stack of toppings, and holding 4.6 stars across 2,914 reviews while charging $14 is harder than holding the same average at nine dollars. It drops below the top three only on value, which is the honest trade: you are paying about $5 more than the Original Hamburger Works Big One for a considerably more ambitious plate. That it has opened a second location without the rating slipping is a reasonable proxy for consistency.

The Stand Arcadia Burger Shoppe
Arcadia, Phoenix
The cheapest burger on this list and the only one whose kitchen grinds its own beef, which is an unusual combination and the reason it outranks several more expensive entries. House-grinding is real work most restaurants at any price avoid, because it means handling whole muscle and managing it daily rather than taking delivery of pre-formed patties. The Standard is $7.99 and holds 4.5 stars across 2,199 reviews. It scores a full 15 on value — nothing else here does more for the money.

Wally Burger
Glendale
The one genuinely distinctive bread choice in the metro: the burger is served on King's Hawaiian rolls, which is sweeter and softer than a standard bun and changes the whole thing rather than decorating it. It is a real point of view, and 4.6 stars across 1,524 reviews says it lands. The combo — quarter pounder, large fry, large drink for $9.89 — is among the best-value orders in the metro. Note it is closed on Sundays. We have knocked a point off credentials because the restaurant advertises itself as the best in Arizona with no awarding body, year or source attached — a claim we could not trace to anything, and one we would rather a restaurant did not make.

What we could not verify
- The restaurant publishes a $9.89 combo price on its own site but no à la carte burger price, so we cannot tell you what the burger alone costs.
- The restaurant's "best in Arizona" claim is self-made. We found no awarding organisation, no year and no source for it, and we are not treating it as a credential.
- Google only; see the note on Yelp above.
Main Burger
Downtown Mesa
The most regionally specific burger on the list, and the most interesting kitchen behind one. The Sonora is built on chiltepin and a cheese costra — the crisped cheese crust of northern Mexican cooking — which is a genuine Sonoran technique rather than a southwestern garnish, and at $10 it is priced like a neighbourhood burger. The team behind it, Roberto Centeno, Armando Hernandez and Nadia Holguin, are 2026 James Beard Best Chef: Southwest semifinalists. We have been careful with that: it is a semifinalist nomination, not a win, and it attaches to their restaurants Espiritu and Tacos Chiwas rather than to Main Burger. It tells you about the cooking, not about this address, which is why it moves the score only a little.

Bad Jimmy's
Downtown Phoenix
The best sourcing story on the list: the beef is K4 Ranch, an Arizona ranch, served on a Martin's bun, and naming your rancher is a commitment most restaurants avoid precisely because it makes substitution visible. Four locations without the rating collapsing is a real operational achievement in this category — scaling a burger is where most independents come apart. It sits mid-table because 4.3 is the lowest average here and 595 reviews is a thinner evidence base than the restaurants above it, not because of anything on the plate.

Stoop Kid
The Churchill, downtown Phoenix
The newest and smallest operation on the list, and the only one grinding brisket for its patties — a fattier, beefier cut that makes a noticeably richer burger and costs more to work with. At $11 inside The Churchill it is a genuinely good downtown lunch. It ranks last here purely on evidence depth: 312 reviews is a real signal but a thin one next to Chuckbox's 5,898, and a single stall in a shared food hall has less margin for an off day than a restaurant with its own kitchen. Worth watching rather than worth discounting.

Three good restaurants we left out on purpose
Aftermath Kitchen & Bar won the 2025 Readers' Choice Best Burger and its $24 Arizona grass-fed burger is well regarded. We left it out because it is a full-service New American restaurant with a $62 steak on the menu, not a burger restaurant, and ranking it against a $7.99 counter burger would flatter neither.
UNiQ Burger holds 4.8 stars across 890 reviews and won Best Vegan Burger. It is entirely plant-based, so it is not comparable on the same axis as the beef above — but if that is what you want, it has the best evidence in the metro for it.
Culinary Gangster also holds 4.8, across 774 reviews, and its half-pound Spicy Gangster Burger at $14.95 is a serious burger. It is primarily an all-day breakfast restaurant, and we could not verify the Phoenix Magazine award it advertises — the magazine's own 2025 index has no such category.
